We are back in the grand ol' United States after spending almost a full month in the Country of Belize on a Medical Mission Trip. I went with my beautiful wife Amy and another resident physician friend, Ellen. We worked at a hospital in western Belize not too far from the Guatemalan border called La Loma Luz. Overall we had a great time and besides our medical work had some excellent experiences with a few weekends off climbing on some Mayan ruins, canoing on a river through the thick lush wilderness, swimming in the Caribbean off of an island where we spent a few days, snorkeling the world's second largest barrier reef, and exploring a cave (both on foot and swimming) that is considered one proposed portal of Xibalba, the Mayan underworld. The Belizean people are wonderful and we were blessed in our experience. However I know for sure that I would not survive much longer in their climate as AC is very rare and the temperatures and humidity are truly homicidal. No AC during the day's activities is not completely cumbersome, but sleeping in sweat and bugs is definitely not for me long-term.This photo is the front of the hospital and we have literally hundreds more that will eventually find their way to our Picasa photo gallery once I have the time for discerning those few that truly represent our experiences the best. We are both back working and literally hit the ground running upon return as I am on my last and final miserable month of inpatient medicine...for life.
